Qasr Kharana is a two-storey Umayyad building in the eastern desert, with a painted inscription dated 92 AH (710). It looks like a fortress but is thought to have been a meeting place or khan on the desert routes. Its rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, with decorated plaster in the upper halls. It lies on the road from Amman to Azraq, with a small visitor centre.
