Qastal is one of the earliest Umayyad palace complexes, built south of Amman on the old Hajj road in the early eighth century. Its mosque has a round-based minaret that is counted among the oldest surviving in Islam. The site includes the palace, the mosque, baths, a cemetery and a large dam and cisterns, and it is on UNESCO's tentative list. It lies close to Queen Alia Airport and the palace of al-Mushatta.
