Karak Castle was taken by the forces of Salah al-Din in 584 AH (1188) and became one of the great strongholds of the Ayyubids and Mamluks. Sultan Baybars and his successors rebuilt and strengthened it, adding halls, towers and a mosque. The castle stands on a ridge above the town of Karak, with long vaulted passages and views over the Dead Sea valley. A museum at the foot of the castle presents its history.
