This is the battlefield of Mu'tah, where in Jumada al-Ula 8 AH (629) an army of three thousand sent by the Prophet ﷺ faced a far larger Byzantine force. Its three commanders, Zayd ibn Haritha, Sayyiduna Ja'far ibn Abi Talib and Abdullah ibn Rawaha, were martyred in turn, and Khalid ibn al-Walid then led the army safely back. The site has the remains of an old mosque and a new mosque beside it, on the plain near the town of Mu'tah. The commanders' graves are at al-Mazar al-Janubi, about ten minutes' drive away.
