This is the grave of Zayd ibn Haritha, the beloved freedman and adopted son of the Prophet ﷺ. He was appointed first commander of the army at Mu'tah in 8 AH (629) and was martyred leading it. His grave stands in the shrine complex at al-Mazar al-Janubi, south of Karak, in the same compound as the grave of Sayyiduna Ja'far ibn Abi Talib. The battlefield of Mu'tah lies a few kilometres to the north.
