Vjetrenica, meaning 'the windy one', is the largest cave in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with several kilometres of passages under the edge of Popovo Polje near Zavala. Its name comes from the strong wind that blows from its entrance. Scientists count it among the richest caves in the world for underground animal life, with many species found nowhere else. Guided tours follow a path through halls of stalactites, stalagmites and underground lakes, at a steady temperature of about 11°C all year. A small museum near the entrance explains the cave and the surrounding Popovo Polje. Tours should be booked in advance, and a warm layer is useful even in summer.
