Trebinje's old town, the Kastel, is a small walled Ottoman quarter on the bank of the river Trebišnjica, laid out in the eighteenth century by the Resulbegović family, the town's hereditary captains. At its heart stands the mosque built in 1726 by Osman Pasha Resulbegović. The mosque was destroyed in 1993 during the war and has since been rebuilt, and it is once again the main mosque of the old town. The surrounding lanes, with their stone houses, gates and a well in the square, are compact and easy to explore, and the town's plane-tree squares and riverside cafés are close by.
