About Shaykh Magribi Masjid (Magribija)

The Magribija is one of Sarajevo's older mosques. The present building went up between 1538 and 1565, after an earlier structure on the site had burned. It was set on fire again in 1697, when Prince Eugene of Savoy raided and burned Sarajevo, and only its stone minaret survived. The mosque was rebuilt in 1766. It became known for its wooden ceilings and wall panels, carved and painted with fine ornament. The English scholar Sir Thomas Arnold, visiting in 1929, said he had only seen work like it in the mosques of Delhi. Shelling damaged the mosque in 1992, it was restored in 1997, and in 2005 it was declared a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
