Ali Pasha Masjid was completed in 1560-61 as an endowment of Sofu Hadim Ali Pasha, an Ottoman statesman who served as governor of Bosnia. It stands west of the old town beside a small park, and is one of the purest examples of classical Ottoman mosque building in Sarajevo. The prayer hall sits under a single large dome, with an entrance portico crowned by three smaller domes and a slender stone minaret beside it. Its proportions follow the imperial style of Istanbul more closely than most Bosnian mosques. The walled courtyard holds old tombstones and a small turbe, and the mosque, lightly damaged in the 1990s war, is now a protected national monument and an active place of prayer.
