Markale is Sarajevo's central open-air market, where traders sell fruit, vegetables, honey, cheese and dried meat under rows of awnings. During the siege it was the scene of two of the war's worst massacres. On 5 February 1994 a mortar shell killed 68 people here, and on 28 August 1995 another attack nearby killed 43. A memorial wall in the market lists the names of those who were killed. The second massacre led directly to the NATO air campaign that helped end the siege. Today the market is busy again, and many visitors pause at the memorial to remember the victims before walking on to Ferhadija street and Baščaršija.
