The History Museum stands next to the National Museum, in a modernist building of the 1960s that was badly damaged during the war and still shows its scars. It was founded in 1945 and covers the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its best-known exhibition, Surrounded Sarajevo, shows how people lived through the siege of 1992-95 with everyday objects: home-made stoves and lamps, improvised weapons, ration packs, letters and photographs. It gives a very human picture of how the city survived, and entry is inexpensive.
