About Ferhad Bey Masjid (Ferhadija), Sarajevo

The Ferhadija was founded in 1561 by Ferhad Bey Vuković, the Ottoman governor of the Bosnian sanjak and a descendant of an old Bosnian noble family. It gave its name to Ferhadija street, the busy pedestrian street that links Baščaršija with the later Austro-Hungarian city, and it remains a working mosque in the middle of everyday Sarajevo life. It follows the classic Bosnian form of a domed prayer hall with a portico of three small domes and a stone minaret. Restorers in the 1960s found five layers of painted decoration inside, the oldest from the sixteenth century in the same style as the Aladža Masjid in Foča. The mosque was damaged during the siege of 1992-95 and has since been repaired.
