Ka'b ibn Mati' al-Himyari, known as Ka'b al-Ahbar, was a learned Jewish scholar of Yemen who accepted Islam in the caliphate of Umar ibn al-Khattab and came to Madinah. He was famed for his knowledge of the earlier scriptures and of ancient history, and many reports about the prophets of old were passed on through him. He later settled in Hims, where he passed away in the caliphate of Uthman. The mosque named after him stands on Bab al-Dreib square in the old city of Homs. It was built over the shrine attributed to him more than two centuries ago and later enlarged, and it is one of the largest mosques of old Homs.
