Al-Kathib is one of the oldest cemeteries of Homs. After the Muslim conquest of Syria many Companions of Nabi Muhammad ﷺ settled in Hims and passed away there, among them Irbad ibn Sariyah and Iyad ibn Ghanm, and the people of Homs have long regarded this cemetery as the resting place of many of them. Local people describe it as the most important Islamic cemetery in the city. The individual graves of the Companions are not all clearly identified, but visitors come to send greetings upon them, often together with a visit to the Mosque of Khalid ibn al-Walid.
