Dhul Hulayfah is the miqat of the people of Madinah, the point at which pilgrims heading for Makkah enter ihram. Nabi Muhammad ﷺ set this boundary himself, and he stopped here under a tree when he set out for the Farewell Hajj in 10 AH, which is why the mosque is called Masjid al-Shajarah, the Mosque of the Tree. It is also popularly known as Abyar Ali. The mosque lies about ten kilometres south-west of Masjid al-Nabawi and is the furthest miqat from Makkah, some 420 kilometres away. It was rebuilt on a large scale in the late twentieth century with extensive facilities for washing and changing, and most pilgrims travelling from Madinah to Makkah stop here.
