The Islamic University of Madinah was founded in 1381 AH (1961) by King Saud ibn Abd al-Aziz to teach the Islamic sciences to students from across the Muslim world. Its colleges teach Shari'ah, the Qur'an, Hadith, da'wah and the Arabic language. Most of its students come from outside Saudi Arabia, and its motto calls it the university on which the sun never sets. The campus lies in the al-Jami'ah district west of the city centre, on Abu Bakr al-Siddiq Road, behind a gateway of striped stone arches. It is a working university with around 22,000 students, and visits are best arranged in advance.
