Al-Rabadhah

Abu Dharr al-Ghifari was one of the earliest people to accept Islam, coming to Makkah from his tribe of Ghifar and declaring his faith openly near the Ka'bah, for which he was beaten. He was known for his truthfulness, his simple way of life and his outspoken criticism of wealth and luxury. During the caliphate of Uthman he left Madinah and settled at al-Rabadhah, a station on the desert road about two hundred kilometres east of the city. He passed away there in 32 AH with only his wife and servant beside him, and a passing group of travellers, among them Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, prepared and buried him. The site of al-Rabadhah, later a stop on the Darb Zubaydah pilgrim road, has been excavated by archaeologists.
