The Zawiya al-Lu'lu'iyya takes its name from Badr al-Din Lu'lu' Ghazi, a Mamluk commander freed by Sultan al-Ashraf Sha'ban, who founded it in the fourteenth century as a zawiya for worship and reflection. It is better known today as the Masjid of Shaykh Lu'lu', and the lane beside it carries his name. The building stands just inside Damascus Gate among the markets of Bab al-Amud, at the start of the lane towards Harat al-Sa'diyya, and most of its worshippers are the merchants of the market. It served as a kindergarten and then a school before it became a mosque in the 1950s, when its iron minaret was added. Behind the prayer hall are a garden and a hall used for gatherings.
