About Maryam Zamani Mosque (Begum Shahi Masjid)

The Maryam Zamani Mosque, also called the Begum Shahi Masjid, was built in 1611 to 1614 during the reign of Jahangir in honour of his mother, Maryam al-Zamani. It is the earliest surviving Mughal mosque in Lahore, and its design influenced the Wazir Khan Mosque a few decades later. The mosque stands east of the Lahore Fort near Masti Gate. Its five-arched prayer hall is decorated with fresco paintings in floral and geometric designs, and it is still in use for prayer. The surrounding shops press close against it, and restoration work has begun in recent years.
