The Diwan-i Aam, the Hall of Public Audience, was built in 1631–32 under Shah Jahan in the Lahore Fort. Here the emperor appeared before his nobles and the public, seated in the marble jharoka, the balcony set into the palace wall behind the hall. The hall is an open pavilion of forty columns standing on a raised platform in front of a large open court. The columns and arcades were restored in the colonial period, and the hall is one of the first buildings visitors reach after entering the fort.
