Srebrenica & Drina

The mosque of Ustikolina, on the Drina between Goražde and Foča, is widely regarded as the oldest mosque in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Local tradition dates it to the mid-fifteenth century, around 1448-49, and it has carried the name of Turhan Emin Bey for more than a century. Evliya Çelebi mentioned it when he passed through in 1664. The mosque was destroyed in the Second World War and rebuilt in 1956, and destroyed again in 1992. It was rebuilt in 2007 in its original simple square form, with a tall stone minaret that can be seen from far along the road. The old headstones in its graveyard are the most striking trace of its age.
