The Aladža Masjid was built in 1549 by Hasan Nazir, an Ottoman official in charge of state finances in Bosnia, with Ramadan Agha as master builder. Its name means 'the colourful one', after the bright painted decoration that covered its walls, and it was counted among the finest Ottoman mosques in the Balkans. In 1992 the mosque was blown up and its remains carried away to rubbish dumps. Between 2014 and 2018 it was rebuilt to the original plans, using recovered stones where possible and recreating its carved stone mihrab, minbar and painted interior, and it reopened on 4 May 2019. It is once again the pride of the Muslim community of Foča.
