The National Museum was founded in 1888 and is the oldest public museum in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its present home, completed in 1913, is a set of four pavilions arranged around a botanic garden on the main boulevard of Sarajevo. The collections cover archaeology, ethnology and natural history. Highlights include medieval stećak tombstones displayed in the garden, prehistoric and Roman finds, a large ethnographic collection with reconstructed Bosnian Muslim house interiors, costumes and crafts, and halls of minerals and animals. The museum survived the war on the front line and remains one of the country's most important cultural institutions.
