Lukomir sits at about 1,470 metres on the southern edge of Bjelašnica and is the highest permanently inhabited village in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its stone houses with steep wooden-shingled roofs, its small mosque and its old graveyard give a picture of mountain life that has changed little over generations. The villagers are shepherds who move their flocks with the seasons, and the women are known for their hand-knitted socks and jumpers. The village sits right on the rim of the deep Rakitnica canyon, and the road is usually open only from late spring to autumn. Simple guesthouses serve traditional food such as pies and cheese.
