King Fahd Masjid opened in 2000 in the western district of Alipašino Polje. It was built with funding from Saudi Arabia after the 1992-95 war, at a time when much of Bosnia's Islamic heritage lay in ruins, and it is one of the largest mosques in the Balkans. The mosque is part of a wider cultural centre with classrooms, a library and sports facilities, and it serves a large residential area of post-war Sarajevo. Its spacious prayer halls and courtyard make it a busy place on Fridays and during Ramadan, and it is easy to reach by tram from the city centre.
