The Rakitnica canyon cuts some 26 kilometres between the mountains of Bjelašnica and Visočica, south-west of Sarajevo, with cliffs that drop hundreds of metres to the river below. It is one of the deepest and least touched canyons in Bosnia. Footpaths follow the rim and link the old highland villages of Lukomir and Umoljani, with dramatic views at almost every turn. The terrain is rugged, so it is best explored with a local guide or on a marked route, and the trails are reached by road only between late spring and autumn.
