About Tunnel of Hope (Tunel Spasa)

During the siege of 1992-95, Sarajevo was surrounded on almost every side. In 1993 its defenders dug a tunnel of about 800 metres by hand beneath the airport runway, which was under UN control, linking the city at Dobrinja with free territory at Butmir. Food, medicine, fuel, weapons and people passed through it, and it is often credited with saving the city. The museum stands at the house of the Kolar family in Butmir, whose home hid the tunnel's entrance. A short preserved stretch of the tunnel can be walked through, and a documentary film, photographs and objects tell the story of life under siege. It lies near the airport, a short drive from the city centre.
