The Bosniak Institute was founded in Zurich in 1988 by Adil Zulfikarpašić as an endowment to preserve the heritage of the Bosniaks, and it moved to Sarajevo in 2001. Its library holds more than 250,000 items, from medieval documents and manuscripts to modern books, alongside an archive and an art collection of works by Bosnian painters and sculptors. The building is notable in its own right. Its architects joined a new building to the restored hamam of Gazi Husrev Bey, a public bath built in the 1530s, so that the old domed bathhouse now forms part of the institute and is used for exhibitions and events. It stands a few minutes' walk west of Baščaršija.
