The Bezistan is a covered market built in the mid-sixteenth century as part of Gazi Husrev Bey's endowment, whose rents helped support his masjid, madrasa and other charitable works. It was where valuable goods such as cloth and jewellery were sold under lock and key. It is a long stone hall under a vaulted roof, with small shops along both sides and a door at each end. More than four centuries on it is still a working market, selling textiles, jewellery and souvenirs, and it offers a cool walk through the heart of Baščaršija between the Ferhadija and Gazi Husrev Bey streets.
