Mashhad al-Husayn is a shrine on the slopes of Jabal Jawshan, west of the old city of Aleppo. It is linked with the journey of the family of Sayyiduna al-Husayn after Karbala in 61 AH, when the captives and his blessed head were carried through northern Syria towards Damascus. Aleppine tradition holds that a drop of his blood fell on a rock close by, where the smaller shrine of Mashhad al-Nuqtah, the Shrine of the Drop, now stands. The building of Mashhad al-Husayn is a fine stone structure begun in the late twelfth century and is one of the most important medieval monuments of Aleppo. It was badly damaged by an explosion in 1918 and later restored. Both shrines are visited by pilgrims, especially during Muharram.
