The Shu'aybiyyah Mosque stands just inside Bab Antakiyah, the Antioch Gate, in the west of old Aleppo. It marks the place where the first mosque of the city was laid out when the Muslims under Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah entered Aleppo by treaty in 16 AH, and it was long known as the Mosque of the Shields, as the soldiers are said to have set down their shields here. The present building was raised around 1150 by Nur al-Din Zangi, who made it a madrasa, and it is also known as the Mulberry Mosque. Its carved stone cornice is one of the finest pieces of twelfth-century decoration in the city.
