Al-Jabiya, near Nawa in the Hawran, was the seat of the Ghassanid princes before Islam and became the main camp of the Muslim armies in Syria after the conquest. After the Battle of Yarmouk, Umar ibn al-Khattab came here and gathered the commanders and the army, and his address at al-Jabiya is one of the best-remembered speeches of his caliphate, reported by many who heard it. Bab al-Jabiya in Damascus takes its name from this place. Today the site is the low hill of Tell al-Jabiya in the fields north of Nawa, the town where the Grave of Imam al-Nawawi stands.
