The castle of al-Muzayrib, north-west of Daraa, is an Ottoman fortress built in the sixteenth century beside the springs and lake of Muzayrib. It was a major station of the Syrian Hajj caravan, and every year a great market gathered here as pilgrims from Damascus prepared for the desert crossing to the Hijaz. The fort is built of black basalt, partly reusing stones from older Roman buildings, and a block with a Greek inscription is set at its main entrance.
