The plain of Dabiq, about 44 kilometres north of Aleppo, was the scene of the Battle of Marj Dabiq on 24 August 1516 (922 AH). The Ottoman army of Sultan Selim I defeated the Mamluks there, and the Mamluk sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri fell on the battlefield. The victory brought Syria under Ottoman rule and opened the way to Egypt, ending the Mamluk sultanate and shaping the region for the next four centuries. Today the site is open farmland near the village of Dabiq.
