Shaykh Abu Bakr al-Wafa'i was a Sufi saint of Aleppo in the sixteenth century, whose following was so large that the hill north of the old city where he lived and taught is still called the Shaykh Abu Bakr quarter. His shrine became the centre of a takiyyah, a Sufi lodge where disciples, the poor and travellers were fed and housed. The mosque with his domed tomb still stands among the old buildings of the lodge, built in the Ottoman period, and it remains a place of prayer and remembrance.
