Bab Touma is one of the seven historic gates of Damascus. The gate goes back to Roman times and was rebuilt by the Ayyubid ruler al-Nasir Dawud in 625 AH (1227), with later Mamluk work. The quarter inside it has taken the gate's name. The gate stands in an open square at the north-eastern corner of the old city and leads into a district of old houses, small hotels, cafes and restaurants. From here it is a short walk along the walls to Bab al-Salam and to the shrine of Shaykh Arslan, and south through the lanes to Bab Sharqi.
