Shurahbil ibn Hasanah was among the earliest Muslims of Makkah, one of those who emigrated to Abyssinia, and a scribe for the Prophet ﷺ. Abu Bakr sent him to Syria at the head of one of the armies of the conquest, and he fought at Ajnadayn and Yarmuk and in the siege of Damascus before Umar appointed him governor of Jordan. He passed away in the plague of Amwas in 18 AH (639). Damascus honours his grave in a small shrine just outside Bab Touma, which he shares with Khawla bint al-Azwar, and a shrine in his name is also honoured in the Jordan Valley. The shrine sits beside the Khawla bint al-Azwar garden on the Barada river, a short walk from Bab Touma and the grave of Shaykh Arslan al-Dimashqi.
