About Dirar ibn al-Azwar Mosque

This mosque near Bab Sharqi carries the name of Dirar ibn al-Azwar of the Banu Asad, a Companion and one of the boldest horsemen of the conquest of Syria. He fought under Khalid ibn al-Walid at Yamama, Ajnadayn and Yarmuk, was captured during the siege of Damascus and rescued by his sister Khawla, and was remembered for riding into battle without armour. He passed away in Syria around 18 AH, and a shrine honoured as his grave stands at Deir Alla in the Jordan Valley. The mosque is a modern white building with a tall slender minaret and a green dome, and it also houses a branch of the Sham Higher Institute. It stands about 150 m from Bab Sharqi, the gate through which Khalid ibn al-Walid entered Damascus, and is a short walk from the graves of Khawla bint al-Azwar and Shaykh Arslan al-Dimashqi.
