Khawla bint al-Azwar of the Banu Asad was a Companion and one of the most celebrated women of early Islam. During the conquest of Syria she fought alongside her brother Dirar ibn al-Azwar under Khalid ibn al-Walid. The histories remember her riding out alone to rescue Dirar when he was captured near Damascus, and leading the women of the Muslim camp at the Battle of Yarmuk. She passed away in Syria around 18 AH (639). Her grave lies in a small shrine just outside Bab Touma, beside the garden on the Barada river that also carries her name, and she shares it with the Companion Shurahbil ibn Hasanah. Bab Touma, the Dirar ibn al-Azwar Mosque and the grave of Shaykh Arslan al-Dimashqi are all a few minutes' walk away.
