Thaniyyat al-Wada', the Pass of Farewell, is the name the people of Madinah gave to the rises on the edge of the city where they accompanied departing travellers and welcomed those returning. Madinah's historians speak of such passes on more than one approach to the city, one on the northern road towards Syria and one here on the southern side above Quba, on the road by which travellers from Makkah arrived. The southern pass is remembered for the welcome the Ansar gave Nabi Muhammad ﷺ as he approached Quba at the Hijrah, and the famous song of welcome, Tala'a al-badru 'alayna, names Thaniyyat al-Wada'. Little marks the spot today, and it is best combined with a visit to Masjid Quba and the historic mosques nearby.
