Husam al-Din al-Jarrahi was an amir and physician of Salahuddin al-Ayyubi, and his title al-Jarrahi, the surgeon, gave the Sheikh Jarrah neighbourhood of Jerusalem its name. He established a zawiya here, the Zawiya al-Jarrahiyya, and was buried in its grounds. His tomb was built in 1201 and became a place of visitation for the people of the city. The present mosque was built around the tomb in 1895, as the new neighbourhood of Sheikh Jarrah grew up around it, and the grave is kept inside the mosque. It stands on Nablus Road about a kilometre north of Damascus Gate, with its slender minaret over the street, close to St George's Cathedral and the Tomb of the Kings.
