Shobak Castle stands on a hill in the highlands north of Petra. It was taken by Salah al-Din in 1189 and rebuilt by the Ayyubids and Mamluks, whose inscriptions can still be read on its walls. Inside are the remains of halls and chapels, and a long stair cut down through the rock to the castle's water source.
