The High Place of Sacrifice is a ceremonial platform cut into the summit of Jabal al-Madhbah, one of the mountains enclosing Petra. The Nabataeans levelled the top of the ridge into a courtyard with rock-cut altars and basins, and on the ridge nearby stand two obelisks about six metres high, carved from the living rock. The climb is up rock-cut steps from near the theatre and takes around 45 minutes, with wide views over Petra from the top. A second path comes down the other side through Wadi Farasa, past the Lion Fountain, the Garden Tomb and the Roman Soldier Tomb.
