About Machaerus (Mukawir)

Mukawir is the hilltop on which Herod built the fortress of Machaerus, where Nabi Yahya is remembered as having been martyred. The site is on the Royal Committee's list of prophets' shrines, and the head of Nabi Yahya is honoured in the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus. The ruins of the fortress crown a conical hill above the Dead Sea, reached by a path and steps from the village of Mukawir, and the summit gives views across the sea to the west.
