Ayla is the early Islamic port town founded around 650, in the time of Sayyiduna Uthman, on the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba. It was a walled trading town and the stopping place for pilgrims travelling from Egypt to the Hijaz. Its excavated walls, towers, four gates and congregational mosque can be seen in the centre of modern Aqaba, along the main road by the sea.
