Aqaba Fort was built by the Mamluk sultan Qansuh al-Ghawri in the early sixteenth century as a station on the Hajj route from Egypt, and it was later held by the Ottomans. Inscriptions over its gate record its building and restoration. The fort stands near the sea in the centre of Aqaba, about a kilometre from the ruins of Ayla, and includes a prayer room and the old courtyard. The Aqaba archaeological museum is nearby.
