Ain Ghazal is one of the largest Neolithic settlements known in the Near East, lived in from around 7250 BC beside the Zarqa river on the eastern edge of Amman. It was found during road building in 1974, and excavations in the 1980s uncovered the Ain Ghazal statues, plaster figures among the oldest large human statues ever found. The statues are now kept in museums, among them the Jordan Museum in Amman, and little stands on the site itself.
