The Abu Darwish Mosque was built in 1961 by Mustafa Hassan, a Circassian known as Abu Darwish, on Jabal al-Ashrafiyya, one of the highest points of Amman. Its walls of black and white stone in a chequered pattern make it one of the best-known landmarks of the city. The mosque can be seen from much of Amman, and its terrace gives views over the city.
