The Jama Masjid in Gornji Šeher, the oldest Ottoman quarter of Banja Luka, was built in 1554-55 by Sofi Mehmed Pasha, the Ottoman governor of Bosnia at that time. It is the second oldest and one of the largest historic mosques in the Banja Luka area, and its name comes from the Arabic jami', a mosque for Friday prayer. It was destroyed in 1993 together with the other mosques of Banja Luka and has since been rebuilt, and it again serves the Muslims of Gornji Šeher. It lies close to the Vrbas and the old thermal springs of Gornji Šeher, a short drive from the city centre.
