Kastel is the fortress at the heart of Banja Luka, on the bank of the river Vrbas. The site was fortified in Roman times, and the fortress took its present form under the Ottomans, who extended it from the sixteenth century onwards as the town grew into the capital of the Bosnian province. Its stone walls, bastions and gates enclose a large park. In summer it hosts concerts and festivals, and a riverside restaurant and walks along the Vrbas are close by.
